Zumatek, Inc.
Zumatek, Inc. is a medical imaging company specializing in the development of leading edge 3D
dedicated imaging technologies for enhanced lesion detection. Researchers at Duke University
Medical Center founded ZumaTek for the purpose of commercializing a platform of innovative,
patient friendly dedicated breast scanners designed to detect the presence of breast cancer
much earlier than current technologies on the market. With the patient lying comfortably in
the prone position, the scanners identify tumors in a patient’s uncompressed breast by using
either (a) nuclear medicine – to detect chemical changes in breast cells that are associated with
malignancy; (b) low dose x-rays to collect CT images of the breast and provide a road-map
pinpointing the suspected malignancy in 3D; or (c) a combination of both technologies in a dual
modality scan providing both functional and structural imaging simultaneously. The device has
undergone extensive feasibility testing with patient trials planned for 2010. Advanced prototypes
are available.
